I live in the Missouri Ozarks in a little town of about 300 people.
I moved here 26 years ago and instantly fell in love with the countryside
and the people...it was a dream from childhood that had finally come true.
Long Island, New York was my home until 1977, then Oregon until 1980, but
never have there been closer ties and roots than I have here. This is home
and I will never leave. There are woods, lakes, ponds, streams and all
kinds of wildlife. It is definitely heaven on earth.
After getting married in 1977, I decided it would be cheaper to make
our clothes instead of buying them so I bought a book to teach myself how
to sew. I really lucked out and picked a good one. For anyone who's
interested, it was Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing. It's battered
and worn, but I still have it. Anything I needed help with could be found
in that book. That's how it all started. It's such a great feeling to
create something out of nothing...for me it was addicting. I was lucky
enough to be a stay at home mom so I made just about everything we wore.
I've always loved the styles from the 60's and 70's and I'm a firm
believer in "doin' your own thing" and being different. Maybe I'm just
stuck in a time warp, but to me there's nothing better than the music and
clothes from the good old days. Yup, I'm definitely an old hippie !!
Life is constantly changing. My daughter lives about an hour away.
She has a B.A. in Near Eastern Antiquities and is working on her Masters
in Religious Studies. I'm happy to say she too is a "do your own thing"
person. My hubby and I went our separate ways, so that leaves me at home
with my animal children (2 dogs, a cat, and a Blue Front Amazon parrot).
I have a 9 to 5 job, but I'm dreaming of the day when I can stay home
again (I think they call it retirement). Before I can do that I have to
finish paying for my little piece of God's green earth. I can't think of
a better way to do it than sewing patchwork, quilt blocks, and hippie
clothing!!
